Facebook has released a new overview of its verification strategy, including who qualifies for the blue checkmark in its apps. Facebook emphasises that its verification tick isn’t that — it’s a symbol for significant accounts that meet certain criteria. In this summary, it tries to explain it further.
To put it simply, in order to get verified on Facebook and/or Instagram, you must:
- Authentic: Your account must be for a real person, company, or entity.
- Unique: Your account must be a one-of-a-kind representation of the person or company it represents. Notable entities (such as pets or publications) are also allowed to participate.
- With the exception of language-specific accounts, only one account per person or business may be confirmed.
- Complete: You must have a public account with a bio, profile photo, and at least one post.
- Notable: Your account must be associated with a well-known, often searched-for individual, brand, or business.
Anyone with an Instagram account can apply to have it verified. Although, it is infamous for being picky (and in many ways secretive) about who gets verified. So, if you’re managing an account that’s on the verge of becoming “notable,” how do you know if you’ve met the requirements?
Just because you have a blue checkmark on Twitter or Facebook doesn’t guarantee one on Instagram.
